ITINERARY : ZAPOTECO MOUNTAINS
Ixtlan – Guelatao – Capulalpan- Lachatao
On our way to the mountains, we will stop by one of the cabins in the area for breakfast. We will continue our trip to the mountains afterwards. We will visit the town of Guelatao, famous for being the birth place of one of the greatest man in the history of Mexico: President Benito Juárez. Then we will continue our tour to the towns of Ixtlán and the magical town of Calpulalpan de Juárez. At these places we will have activities like hiking and biking, as well as the opportunity of acquiring arts and crafts of the region. Lunch. Afterwards, we will visit one of the most picturesque towns of the region, in the highest part of the mountains, Lachatao. Dinner. Night off. If you wish, we can organize a bonfire or just admire the stars; this is the place to do it!
Prepare yourself for walking and visiting a beautiful town. We will get to see one of the most beautiful and important ranches of the region, where gold and silver were being extracted, the Hacienda de 5 señores. You will be able to take a bath in its cold river, if you like of course. We will be spending time with people from the region who will invite you to be part of any of the activities taking place there: support in the vernacular architecture (making of adobe blocks), making of tortillas typical of the region… you will learn and be able to participate in the making of this Mexican dish: corn shelling, preparation of the nixtamal, kneading, warming up the stove, and the best of all, putting the tortilla on the stove so that you can enjoy it later with some delicious cheese. You will be able to do horse riding, or cook a delicious bread with pulque on a traditional oven. Lunch. Into the evening you may participate in a temazcal ceremony, directed by a zapoteco chaman; the temazcal will purify your body and soul before bed.
On this day we will have a beautiful tour towards the cave of the virgin. In this tour, you will get to know big secrets of traditional zapoteco medicine, amongst trees, flowers and plants of the region; you will be initiated in the botanical world. We will have a talk with the curandera or healer of the region, and if you like, you will be able to get a limpia or cleanse, or a healing massage. In the afternoon we will have some delicious mezcal with appetizers and dishes from Oaxaca.
