ENCAUSTIC PAINTING HISTORY

Encaustic painting is one of the oldest artistic techniques. The word Encaustic comes from the Greek enacustikos, which means: to Engrave with Fire.

Found amongst the Egyptian localities of Er Rubayat and Hawara, the funerary portraits known as the Fayum paintings, are the oldest encaustic paintings registered so far (1000 years A.C.). These Fayum portraits were preserved in perfect state despite of being buried for so many years.

Due to its nobility and plastic characteristics, many artists have used this technique to create their pieces. The versatility of encaustics makes it possible to be combined with multiple other techniques like pencil drawing, carbon, pastel, oil, acrylic and photography.

HOW IS IT MADE?

Encaustic Painting it’s generally made with bee’s wax, dammar resin, or pigment. Encaustics have a light glossy finish when it dries. Bee’s wax works as a seal and a curator; it allows it to be used with diverse materials like paper, which do not suffer degradation due to the seal of wax, which keeps it away from oxygen.
